The great mycelial nets are always there in healthy woodland soils, and constitute a hefty part of Archived Message

the atmospheric carbon held long-term (as long as the woods survive) in the bodies of the soil community. They are sometimes timber destroyers, as Derek says, true. But that's part of their function. On balance of all their functions, an essential part of a forest life-community. Set-aside of land for completely unexploited, freely-self-organising wilderness (such as the deeply-encouraging Chernobyl exclusion zone) is also an essential part of any credible remediation plan. And remember that most of the Eath's surface area is ocean, so these wild lands - 'anialdir clir/pristine wildernesses' as they're called in one of my unpublished wish-fulfilment stories - also need to extend to large marine sanctuaries, wherin no - or no more than peasant offshore hand-powered - exploitation happens.
