Despite Tom Sinclair's tortuous - and unconvincing - argument, I find Sinclair's argument neither torturous or unconvincing. I think the points he makes are sound and well-argued. You personally might get used to using and having a whole lot less, and no doubt you are making a bigger contribution to alleviating the global climate crisis than many others in our society. But you still rely, as do we all, on the system we're part of and can't escape from (unless we go and live on an island and become totally self-sufficient). Need I have to point out that you use a computer every day, which requires electricity, you buy food which has to be transported to the shop/supermarket by road transport (not by bike) -- in other words you consume goods and services because you have to live. Sinclair is simply pointing out the difference between individual and collective responsibility in reforming or re-making "the system" so that it works for the benefit of all mankind in sustaining life on this planet instead of striving to destroy it. Reducing your carbon footprint is commendable but it's not worth jack -- even if we all did it -- unless and until we change the suicidal system we're part of. That was his central point, as I read it, about critics accusing XR supporters of hypocrisy because they ride to demos in private vehicles and drink Costa coffee. (Other brands of coffee are available)
