Derek, Can't say I'd argue against much of what you have just posted, indeed, I'd go further, until the West reduces both its energy demands and consumption by at least 50% we are buggered which ever way we look at the equation - I think people also need to revisit the 'Limits of Growth' and how its predictions in the 70s have now panned out - don't see much emphasis on this, indeed, we have the reverse, whereby many believe technology will come to the rescue if only the World de-carbonises, which is moonshine as many of the low carbon solutions on offer have serious ecological downsides themselves and all continually place emphasis on Growth, which of course allegedly will pay for all this Greening stuff - think of Monbiot pushing nuclear energy. Personally speaking, I think the Amish communities in the USA can teach us much, or reverting back to how most existed prior to 1914 in the West, of course not wishing to repeat the massive inequality that existed then - its not only gas & oil that needs to be taken on, but the likes of Apple and Samsung, together with Agribusiness, which both pollutes and destroys.
