Ah, if only I had bet on the predictability of certain responders, then I'd be a millionaire by now. According to UNHCR figures, the top 5 'sending' countries for asylum seekers/refugees in the UK in 2018-2019 were Iran, Iraq, Albania, Eritrea and Pakistan. I would suggest that it is the repressiveness of both Iran and Pakistan which is likely to drive their citizens to seek asylum in a country half a world away rather than western meddling in those countries' internal affairs. I'm not aware we are at war with Albania nor Eritrea. Iraq is, of course, a nightmare following western intervention. Poland has quite rigorous immigration controls for non-EU migrants. The country wants skilled, 'high-value' migrants; I'm surprised the young Polish lady didn't know this. Did Poland's immigration policies bother her, I wonder, when she lived in Poland? No, I don't think it was me who was happy about Ms Begum being stripped of her British citizenship. What I have argued for with Ms Begum is consistency of treatment. A 15 year old Shamima Begum cannot be absolved of her ISIS activities because she is a child while a 15 year old Greta Thunberg is lionised as possessing all the wisdom in the world. Either a 15 year old can understand complex issues like climate change and jihadi ideology or they can't. If you want to believe that Greta can but Shamima can't, then that's fine but all you're doing is casting their mental, emotional and moral capacities into a mold that fits your particular argument based on no evidence whatsoever of their respective cognitive abilities.
