Sorry: I forgot the Twitter link! I suspect Craig is thinking aloud whilst writing this one. Indeed the state has exclusively all the cards: the weaponry, the trained forces & the resources for mass imprisonment. Even without drawing on these resources, effective counterviolence against an errant state is near impossible anyway, controlling as it does with the elites the mainstream media and thus the narrative: the ability to make its own actions appear reasonable and that of its opponents reprehensible whatever the actual facts is its greatest tool. Once the media has lined up the examples, the compliant UK judiciary also has a habit of reverting to "bloody code" type operations: six months for stealing a few bottles of water comes to mind. On the Hong Kong issue I think Craig is leaning on his old UK Diplomat mindset: its taken him a while to escape a lot of that imperial head-baggage but some of it still lingers. Having said that, its not black & white: from all reports authoritarianism is on the rise in the Peoples Republic, but "...like man, the west really cares about the freedoms of the people of China and Hong Kong..." phhhh.
