I think sue's concern is that it's still within a capitalist system. If you give the money to the rich the poor still have to work so the intrinsic value is our debt of labour. If you give it to me (£15000) I could live on that for a year and a half (with still most going to my landlord!) so wouldn't need to labour. And if I don't the jig is up on the value of that money capitalist speaking; it's only worth the labour it is banked against. In order for a living wage to work, the system would have to be totally restructured. Living wage is probably an end goal rather than a start goal. You first have to take the power and money away from the elite and put it into the community. I think the starting point is property; we shouldn't have to work so damn hard just to make others who don't just own their own home but mine too richer. If a living wage just ends up putting the money into the pockets of the rich (by way of rent for example) but still within the capital framework we end up with diminished value of that money and we still can't buy the things we need (because of inflation set by the rich). It would be a good idea if it was outside of our current system., within it, there would be little change for most of us I think.
