Talking to a friend yesterday who had it from 1st week of March, and fever only stopped about a week back (so similar to dan). He described the nhs111 service as a joke trying to talk to doctor while running a fever of 39.5, who was recommending paracetamol and bed rest. Wasn't till his wife (a nurse) got on phone and listed out his sats (?) (she has all the gear), that doc recommended hospital/ae (apparently he'd got pneumonia too). Says to me a little about possible problems; if you don't have a nurse/other medical professional on hand seems people are being robbed off ;at least till critical by which time in hospital it's more a case of caring for the terminally ill. Surely there's a more effective way of triarging cases than saying call us back when you're dying? Maybe it's a clue as to why there are so many deaths occurring as a result in the uk? Add to that all the other usual medical emergencies that are probably being treated similarly and the excess mortality in the uk ATM seems about par for the course.
Dan is seeing hospital admissions which I don't doubt for a second but it perhaps misses the backstory.
