Israel chose to call it a war. This terminology was their choice, not mine. And this terminology comes with baggage: In war, the first victim is the truth. That is how I deal with this subject: Not to say claims are true, or untrue or could not be true. Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. All the victims could be dead. Or they could be entirely nonexistent. How would I know? But the point is that, true or untrue, it DOES NOT justify the random slaughter of 13,000+ Palestinian civilians, and does not change how I feel about the latter. It does not have that effect on me: Whether there was a sex crime or not a sex crime, why is the response to then multiply the numbers by an order of magnitude or two, then deal out a kind of death by Russian roulette on a civilian population? Its a kind of a non sequeteur. It seems curious to me that there is any crime whose response is to multiply the number of victims by an order of magnitude or two, then kill random people in that magnified number. Its just a curious mindset. But it has become a familiar mindset, now. And its also a mindset we saw throughout ww2 (killing whole French villages when the French resistance struck etc.). In this sense, the best Israeli approach would probably be to say nothing, then nobody could make the “vengeance” connection. But they chose not to do that. Their approach is theirs, not mine.
