When Israel and the United States both 'weaponize' the stories about 'rape' in wartime, it does sound like propaganda, similar to the lurid stories circulated about German soldiers raping nuns during their great offensive at the start of WW1. None of these stories, which appeared all over the British, French and US media in 1914 were ever shown to be based on facts, on the contrary. Another problem is that the rape stories are so horrible, that it's difficult for journalists, if they wer inclined to, to investigate them; because to do so means one is questioning or even implying that Israel might be lying, might be spreading propaganda and cynically manipulating public opinion in the service of their war effort. But saying that Israel might be using 'rape as a toy of war', is, by itself, easily twisted into another example of... 'antisemitism', so most journalists in the West ar forced to trend very carefully. Would Israel, a western democracy, really lie about something like that? |
