All Big West Schools have to convince donors that giving to the athlete directly is somehow the same as the department, but it is not. Facilities and program operations fundraising still has to be done. NIL is now on top of that, but there are only so many P4 schools who can afford this. If the universities of the Big West stay committed to athletics, they will still be able to get athletes as high school athletes will take a scholarship over nothing. How long the athletes stay and how that appeals to the donor base to pay athletes directly is what really has changed.
How does this effect the Big West schools. The governor gives UC schools a lot more money than Cal States. Then schools like UCI also have donors like Donald Bren to donate to them.
I had typed a long rant of NIL, but the bottom line seems to be NIL has professionalized athletics, and it will result in a shrinking of college athletic opportunities for many.
Athletes monetizing social media and marketing deals seems fine to me. The athletic departments having any involvement doesn't seem necessary, and unlimited free transfers ruins it for me.
As more schools can't afford to be at the top giving cars and cash to athletes who hardly go to class, they will cut athletics. Olympic sport programs will suffer. Maybe the niche of just the scholarship remains enough to get commitments for a year or two. I just don't like the direction it has gone.
