Harvard and other large endowment universities are trust funds who happen to be schools. They are very political and influential, and accept large donations from foreign governments (directly) and foundations, besides their regular donors. They are a private institution, but the government can do what it wants with grant money and visas, until the courts say different. They'll be fine in long term with their resources.
Any action like this is going to be fought in the court either way. A judge will put a pause while the law is figured out. Its probably now more complicated for athletes, as they are no longer just a student visa, but would have to have a work visa (or some other kind of visa?) to accept other payments as well.
I was caught off guard that Columbia enrolls over 9k Chinese national students. Huge percentages of colleges are now foreigners: NYU is over 40%, USC has over 18k, UCLA over 6k. At LB, we have approximately 500 Indian students and 300 Chinese students, and many others. It seems public universities would be more geared to allow Americans in.
But athletics has been a great arena for foreign athletes to shine. Volleyball, Tennis, Water Polo, track have all seen some great foreigners. I hope it continues, but don't necessarily agree with the percentage increases we see across the boards in many colleges for student enrollment. Previous Message
Don't really want to get into politics but here is the reason given why Trump wants to bar the foreign students from Harvard:
Harvard, along with a swathe of other colleagues, is a bastion of antisemitism and ideological indoctrination, according to Trump and his allies.
The DHS said Harvard had created an unsafe campus environment by allowing “anti-American, pro-terrorist agitators” to assault Jewish students on campus. Previous Message
Harvard is a private school and should be able to attract students as it wishes. I doubt this will hold up in court unless the rule applies to all private or public schools. Previous Message
Harvard is being punished for standing up to Trump. Plus he needs to throw a little red meat to MAGA.
Schools like LBState are not on Trump's radar. Previous Message
Just heard on the news the Feds are barring Harvard from enrolling foreign students.
If this expands to all colleges and universities it would greatly hurt our chances to recruit the best athletes possible.
We will have to see how this evolves.
