Done with night driving

That's it for me, unless I have to go out for any emergencies.

Stopped at some lights, a big vehicle behind me burning holes in the back of my head with it's insanley bright lights, and dazzling me in all my mirrors.

The one in front of me burning holes in my retina by keeping their foot on the brake keeping an array of very bright LED lighs continuousley on.

Waiting to pick up my daughter stopped on teh side of the road, a car stops behind me and decides to leave their headlights on all the while FFS.

Night driving has been spoilt by all these high intensity lights.

Rant over.....

I am starting to feel the same. Have a dinner coming up which would mean driving there and back in the dark. Lucky me a train goes within 10 minute walk of the venue.

They are a problem and the manufacturers are improving some cars. Then, Hyundai and VW bring out a new model with a led strip right across the front and rear.
My own headlights have various stages of light and multiple lens so light is not directed too high and the rear lights are smaller.
What is apparent is i can stop at a junction, then take my foot off the brake pedal and the brake lights stay on until i move forward so i expect many other cars also do this.
My eyes are affected by the LED lights a lot in Country lanes. Saturday is a long drive in the dark to Birmingham early then dark most of the way home but i will be wearing some anti glare glasses this time.

Really cannot see the point in that, brake lights that come on when you brake, absolutley fine, but staying on when stationary, what a stupid idea, if an oncomming driver cannot see a car stopped in front of them with their normal lights on then they didnt ought to be driving.

Probably more likely a "safety feature" forced upon them by clueless legislators.

The NCAP safety score for cars used to be about testing the integrity of a car's structure to determine how it protected the occupants. Currently it less about that and more about the fitment and functionality of "active avoidance" systems that try to have the car attempt to prevent an accident occuring in the first place. I find these systems to be so badly judged, intrusive and, in some cases, downright dangerous that I have them turned off. Some can be disabled permenantly in settings, but some have to be disabled every time the vehicle is started. A Grade A PITA forced upon manufactuers by politicians "Unicorn hunting" in the impossible search for "Vision Zero" that the customer is forced to pay for.

I'm lucky enough to drive a car so old it has none of that and isn't connected to the internet.

I am worried about what I can replace it with when the time comes - I don't imagine I'll be able to carry on being free of unnecessary technology.

There used to be a legal limit on lighting power. What happened to that, I wonder? Perhaps the same as the rules that made car bonnets low enough to avoid smashing pedestrians' pelvises and killing them.

It's a funny world, driven I suspect by the power of car manufacturers

It really depends on what you WANT to replace your car with.

You can buy, today, a low mileage, mint condition example of any car made in the past 100 years, generally for less than a new car.

Pick a year, for example, the last year they made a car with proper dials and switches for the
heater and wipers instead of a touch screen, buy a nice one, and drive it for 10 years, then get another ....

It's what I do, and it works!

Yep, I've been doing that for all my driving life, Lannis. The problem is that the remaining proper cars are fewer and farther between now.

Very similar to what I do Lannis - I have never owned a new car and never intend to.

My 06 registered 1.6 VW Golf is still running very strong after 125,000 miles not had any major or expensive failures when that time comes I will probablky bin it off and get a replacement.

I'm with Lannis. My current car is a Kia Rio Diesel. Very simple and does everything I want in a car. I intend to drive it until it dies or I do first. If I had to buy another car it would be a nice used easy one without all the modern gizmos. The old mod has a 19 year old Mini and she loves it.

The curse of LED thank goodness the Skada has proper light bulbs easy to replace and don't cost a fortune it dose have strip LED driving lights at the front..all the other gizmos are switched of don't need automatic hand break and lane awareness sleepers.. Talking to the Ambulance crew the other day and said their vehicles are the same All switched off as he said we spend a lot of the time on the otherwise of the road..

Andy I agree with you. I drive a lot of miles and have to agree something must be done about the over bright lights it is getting so dangerous.

Mine do have auto dipping if behind a car or one coming toward me which is a help. I prefer halogen lamps as they do have more range than LED but not much chance of getting halogen on any car now. There may be some on lower priced cars but the higher end ones like all the clever shapes they can make the lights.

Before anyone chips in and says it's my eyesight, if you do the Google search I suggested above, it appears that a very high percentage of motorists have problems with modern vehicle lighting.

It does say that it is more of a problem for older drivers due to our ageing eyes, but that should not be a reason for doing something aboout it.

TBH I cant see anything ever being done about it, like a lot of other Tech, the genie is out of the bottle and it aint going back in any time soon, for me it means only essential nightime driving.

Also have you seen the price to replace a broken LED light unit 300 quid for my Daughters indicator repeater on the wing mirror.. also the LED light clusters can not be focused only single lED can..

Totally agree. Today's cars light up like Christmas trees. The regs must have changed since 1979 when I built a Scamp special using Mini front and rear subframes as the positioning and size of the lamp units were vey specifically restricted. When I took it for the conformity check the VOSA examiner spent a lot of time measuring to check that all aspects of the light units met the regulations.

Seem to remember a mate of mine back in the day fitted some reversing lights to a mini that he had, when came the time for MOT it failed because they were fitted too high up.

With you Andy. Driving back across the Cotswolds yesterday evening after our regular 14 day visit to see if sister-in-law is still ok to live on her own was a real PIA.
Any black clad cyclists, and I’ve seen them often, don’t stand a chance.

If you have the bad luck of breaking an LED headlight unit on a Porsche, Mercedes etc, expect a minimum of 1000 for the part. Easy to write a car off now just a few dents and lamps.

Its interesting that all recent cars have an emergency phone installed. Mine is under a small flap near the mirror so press a button in emergency and you have a response from a call centre. I often get messages that the internet has failed when driving around the lanes. These SOS calls were required on all new cars about 5 years ago.
If you want reliability from a small car without repair bills, Honda Jazz. The perfect 1300 petrol car with loads of legroom and luggage space coupled with very low noise. Worth looking at
