NAPA pill draw

What is the point of drawing pills if the lineups are straight down the line by pill number? The 3rd best pill starts 3rd in the first heat as opposed to starting pole in the 3rd heat? Theres no advantage to getting a good pill? Anyone else notice this?

On the surface:
Based on the description you have provided you should be looking for the #1 pill
That is still a good pill.

A little deeper:
Assuming there are eight cars in each heat race the numbers 9 and 17 would be equally as good

Deeper still:
Take the pill you drew, start in your position and step firmly on the peddle on the far right until the flagman tells you to stop.

I mean this all in jest-
I can understand your frustration with the reinventing of the pill drawing process

Good response Kelly. Now I think I will really muddy the waters and take a trip back in time to the 1960's and really ruffle some folks feathers.

1. Do away with Pill Draw all together.
2. 100 % inverted starts, fast guys at the back.
When did Gaylord Lippert, Pinky Odom, Dick Pool, Roby Harger and others start at the front?? These guys all came from the rear to take their many wins. ( Think J.R. Bonesteel today ).
3. Run Time Trials first 3 shows of the year. After that use point average. New cars start at back of field.
4. Pay points for 1st, 2nd and 3rd in heat races to make it worthwhile for drivers to come from the back.

I know these are not popular ideas today but it sure worked WAY back when. Some folks have talked about all of the winners coming from the front row, inverted starts would probably solve that problem and even give more drivers the opportunity to take a win.

These are just my old fashioned thoughts and I didn't mean to stir up any trouble.

I don't like the idea of high points to the back or “fast cars” to the back at all. In my eyes this leads to on track carnage and good cars either being torn up by people that can't hold a car straight or tearing up cars because they have to hurry to the front and don't have time to pass you as cleanly as they can. From the fans side of the fence I can see the attraction for inverted starts, more wrecks more action. From a drivers point why not start in the spot you earned, pill draw for the heat and start the winners of the heats in front, let the "fast" cars race it out and everyone can race next to cars they can compete with. Then everyone is racing the whole race, instead of getting torn up going forward or backwards. Racing has changed so much since the old days, people do not have the same respect for equipment that they used to have, weather it’s mine or theirs is irrelevant and people tear it up anyway. Just my opinion…

Gary, it's too bad you didnt see the races at Speedway Park or ABQ Raceway in the 70's! All the Points leaders started in the back every week!

I really wish I could have seen those races; I just get to hear about the good old days of racing. Back then people had consequences for their actions. The same people that said every kid is special and should get a trophy, that every kid should make the team, are the same people who ruined inverted starts. Back in the good old days if I wrecked you, you could break my nose on the front stretch to a cheering crowd and maybe then I would get the idea not to do it again. The track might give you a talkin to, and remind me that I need to either not tear up cars or go home and stay there. Today that same thing would land you banned from the track, on your way to jail, a restraining order, and a court date. While you’re away I have free rain to destroy more cars, maybe the track will talk to me maybe not. So as long as we all are on this treat everyone nice and don’t retaliate, don’t fight, do not show any emotion other than happiness B.S. inverted starts are going to do nothing more than tear cars up and make the wreck fans happy. Everyone says the children are looking up to you, so that’s why you shouldn’t fight, maybe they are looking up to us, so what do we teach them? To let the whole world crap on us and do nothing about it, let kids pick on you and push you around? The kids that look up to me (if any) are the same ones that will defend themselves, their family, and friends from bullies and abuse; you know the way it used to be when racing was good! Its all interconnected people… Just deep thoughts from a shallow mind.

When we meet, and I hope that we do, I am sure you and I will get along just fine, if for no other reason this post alone.

(Although I still think inverting the top eight cars is the best compromise to all this hub-bub)

Indeed good points from both sides of the argument

And there lies the promoter’s conundrum-
Happy racers or happy fans?
What racers and fans have in common as they both want the best return on their investment.
The trick is to balance both for a successful operation.

It will be complete carnage he exclaimed!
I did not have the heart to tell him that in less than an hour, assuming he survived his bloated heat race, I was going to line him up in a main event which would start twenty four cars.

A lot of people didnt care for Dick Shoudt for a Host of reasons, but I remember him saying why he never brought the World of Outlaws to Raceway..."Why Pay Steve Kinser $10,000 to win starting on the Front Row?"
