In the past several years there have been many angling issues raised in the angling press, from the snapper fighting fund, Kahawhai, the people's fish, to the establishment of marine reserves. Whilst most were handled very badly with some outlandish claims in the media, but when a group of people, backed by their governing body got together, their concerns were listened to.
If I was the local MP or the Minister of Fisheries, I would take careful note of those who believed I was on an inflated salary for very little work, I would also consider those who believe I raise taxes to support my income, and their concerns would be filed in the bin situated under my desk. However, should an individual, or better still a club even an association make an approach, I would listen to what they had to say and weigh up the issue with the view to making inquiries and perhaps take further action.
Just recently, Yoey was asking for issues that he, as the local representative, could take to the N.Z.A.C.A. I am confident that as you and others have a genuine concern over perceived diminishing gurnard numbers, you will have suggested he takes this to the angler's governing organisation. Like you I will wait to hear how they intend to handle these concerns, especially after reading the interesting information made known by Big Dave.
