I caught 6 gurnard on my last trip to Whakaki. Thats the most I've ever caught in one outing. One thing I did notice over the weekend was the Gurnard were VERY tentative biters. They would fiddle with the bait for ages. I missed quite a few by pulling line in when they weren't yet hooked. In the end, on noticing the tiny wobbles in the rod tip I would give them lots of slack line and wait for a good minute or two. That usually resulted in a better hookup rate than winding in at the first sign of action.

Yes I'm guilty of using 10kg line, mainly because I don't like to lose gear, or 2 hours of fishing time, to rays
