What was so funny? At 4:00pm kahawhai were going mad smashing into bait fish no more that ten metres from the beach. At times their backs were out the water with small fish jumping, fleeing the predators. I could have left the torpedo at home and caught fish with a butterfly net they were in so close.
This morning I heard of a good catch of gurnard at Awatoto last evening. All taken on my favourite bait, anchovies. I did ask if the baits were supported in the water column with floats, or on the bottom, they were on the bottom. This angler also reported a happening exactly as I experienced a couple of weeks ago, he hooked a small YEM only to have it taken on a long Tiki Tour by a Kingfish. Like mine the Kingfish didn't stick but the mullet's flanks looked as if they had a severe beating with an orbital sander.
