I fish the Wairarapa beaches but hope to do sorties to your area. Like you I am not really a competitive angler these days but have had success at competitions in years long past.
Great to try different baits and methods, I don't target any particular fish but am grateful of catching a feed and letting the rest go.
My kids are getting keen so I can use this to justify buying new gear when/if finances permit.
