    Hi Trev.
Crab damage on the bait is a good indicator as to weather there are fish around. I always check my first bait after ten minutes to see if they are active. Floats do slow them down a bit but don't stop them. If my baits are disappearing, I sometimes use only one rod until fish move in and send the crabs to ground. You need to check the bait at least every 15 mins, and when the crabs stop chewing you can be sure fish have turned up. If your hooks are bare, check them more often.
We do get lice down here, but they are more of a pain at night. when they are about, they will clean out your bait faster than crabs. Floats work on lice as well, but dont stop them.
    cheers, Ed.
