No Go.

I have fished Te Awanga twice in the last seven days, three hours over the high and three hours over the low. The sea was quite flat but the water was far from clean. The result being one small kahawai that wouldn't make a competition scales and one pipi. This cheeky sod attached itself to the hook as wasn't prepared to let go.

Every cast the bait was stripped within minutes, which would lead me to think crabs, yet there was no characteristic pull down of the rod tip.

Had I been fishing one rod I would accept my result without hesitation but I was fishing three rods and I would have expected a little more success even if I missed any takes.

When fishing a reasonable seabed (no foul ground) I am beginning to have doubts about the use of a pulley rig. With a running trace the fish (or crab) when taking the bait nearly always registers a direct pull from bait to the rod tip, even when using grip leads. I am beginning to wonder if we miss a few timid takes with a pulley rig because the fish is pulling against a lead firmly anchored to the sand.

Over foul ground and for larger fish the pulley rig comes into its own, but when fishing for nominal sized fish, such as gurnard, I can't help wander if the pulley rig with grip leads is making life difficult, especially with those timid takes.

Any one else had thoughts along these lines?

Last year I tried the pulley rig with no success while they are great for getting that extra distance I have decided to go back to using the standard running trace and the ledger rigs.

My experience over the last week has been very similar to yours Hangler. I have caught plenty of YEM's on my bait rod and had wondered if they were stripping my bait. So I am most interested in other comments and thoughts.

Hi Andrew, the thought my baits were being stripped by Yellow Eyed Mongrels had crossed my mind but with the end gear being so firmly anchored the small takes were not showing on the rod.

I am strongly inclined to follow the same steps as Fin-nor and ditch the pulley rig system and return to the ultra simple running rig whilst fish seem to be a little scarce.

In many sports and occupations the 'KISS' principal (Keep it simple stupid) can often turn out to be by far the best advice available.

Ledger rig seems to out-fish pulley rig for Gurnard and Lemons (in my experience) if you can reach them....
The problem is this.
For gurnard at least, they are usually WAAAAY out there, and a pulley rig or some other clipped down system is required to get enough distance to reach them.
I'm talking about local beaches here, Clifton to Mohaka.
I'm sure that less depleted fishing areas might have Gurnard in close (like we once did) and the ledger rig would be perfect.
But at the moment (again this is my experience only) its a catch22 situation. You need the distance, but you also need the ledger rig..

Try using the Pulley Rig upside down, casts well and gets baits on the bottom great for Gurnard and Lemons.

Had the pulley rig hooking solid last two visits to one of the local beaches . Several gurnard, blue mokis, solid trevs, and umpteen Kahawai. Then thats my main stay rig nowadays. Had i been using other rigs I'm sure i would have similar results. Some local beaches are fishing sh!t at the moment and me thinks maybe thats your problem right there. Did you get any solid bites or just picker fish crap?….

No solid bites for me - just picker fish and the occasional crab. When I have a poor day I wonder if it is me and my technique or if I have picked the wrong location or alternatively if everywhere is poor. So after the feedback from Snappa Napier, I will be changing the beach where I fish. I had been fishing Awatoto / East Clive, so my guess is that I would have better luck going north of Napier...

East Clive can be a good Kahawai/snapper spot at certain times of the year. It can also be as dead as a dodo and often is unfortunately. Awatoto always seems crowded to me and Ive seldom caught anything other than Kahawai there. Always seems more promise on Napier's Northern beaches. There's been a few hints of the appearance of certain species so its got too worth a try.Let us know how you get on?

Interesting to note PakandSave had gurnard on special this morning at $24.00 a kilo for fresh fillets. If they are able to retail this specie at the cheapest it's been for a very long time, it means the commercial guys are getting good quantities.

Hopefully that is a sign they are moving closer inshore.

Well today was a bung day i guess just a solitary gurnard a kahawai and a big fakoff raymond. Taradale club had there comp day today, not 1 snapper caught at all???. Yes hangler you are correct about the gurnard , a good mate who works at star foods said the best season in ages for gurnard. Now thats positive isn't it?. Those captures have been taken south of the cape but definitely worth looking at whirinaki in december.

I went north of Napier to fish dusk yesterday. While it wasn't one of those magical fishing days, I did catch a medium sized kahawai and had a few more nibbles. That means by the standard of what I have experienced in the last few weeks it was "above average".

Dont give up Andrew. Try round Whirinaki reef or Gill Road. In fact I'd pass on east clive for a while and try the Northern areas a bit more. Dunno what the kahawai are doing there at the moment but its worth a shot. Dont know if you use floats but I'd definitely use them on one line during the day anyway. Might help improve your catch rate with that species.

Rex, are you suggesting floats on the trace to help keep the bait above the crabs, or a float on the line for a kahawai or a Kingfish?

Well Andrew, ya better pop up here for a fish. some nice fish being taken of the beachs up here. Just ask Chad, he has caught some fab fish like trevs up to 7.8kg. the trevs are big at the moment. this year alone I have had 2 PBs in the trev department. 5.3kg and just 2 weeks ago a 7.17kg bullnose. was a huge fight, fab fun I must say.

This is one example of something I would use. I quite like a running rig for this set up. Its about 30cm in length. I guess the goal is to mimic a swimming bait fish by getting at about the depth where you think a kahawai is hunting.

If crabs turn up then I would double the length to try and keep their greedy little claws away from my half a pilly or anchovy. Lucky I looked at that trace as I now see the hook has actually been bent by those scrappy big CHB kahawai. A good Mustad penetrator too.

Im assuming that fish was at BOP Frosty? Fishings been good there I hear.

Hi Rex, No BOP trevs dont get that big lol. This one is 7.17kg.

Have a good look at the sand and if you know the far north you should be able to identify the beach. Chad dont give anything away lol. Lets see who can pick the beach

. looking at my bottle of white sand i collected last visit earlier this year. That evening was 9 casts 9 Snapper, but the donk trevs were biting at the hoek

and paua was humming. Ah roll on 3 weeks solid in march…….. You still brewing Frosty??

You dont get that good without keeping a few secrets I guess. Sounds like a nice spot anyway even if its a spot x. Will be a long time before I get up to the far north I think but its nice to dream.

I fish with two rods, pulley rig on one and two-hook ledger rig on the other. Enables a variety of baits to be used and gets baits on bottom, and up a bit. Also varies casting distance.

Dont worry Rex there are a thousand spot x's up north. They all have their day. The clue was the sand which is found on the eastern side of the skinny bit and mainly near the top. The fact that it was a trevally could indicate that it is inside a harbour like Parengarenga. Worth a look at any time. I just dug up some super 8 movies from the 1970s and early 80s fishing for kingfish in the far north. Awesome, we did very well with what we had then. In fact getting up there was a feat in itself.

Very nice fish Frosty, thats a cracker bro.

Well deserved, thats top shelf. The photo does not do that fish justice. Its not often you get to see trevally over 15lb coming ashore. Im not sure what it is, but they are pretty dam special to catch and the smile doesn't seem to leave the face for quite some time. Certainly a memorable catch.

Looks like papamoa beach to me, judging by the color of the goldern tinge in that sand.

Apart from when im chasing moki or kingfish. A pulley rig is the only rig I really use. The gurnard, snapper and trevally ive caught lately haven't seemed to mind the rig at all.

Everyone has a favored rig they use regularly. In most cases you will make what you use work for you. There is no secret rig that catches anymore fish then the next rod, its just a preference in presentation and casing.

I prefer the pulley rig as the areas I tend to spend more time in require reasonable distance. The pulley rig helps me with that situation, to reach areas I couldn't using other rigs. Ledgers ect...... still work well, nothings changed in the past 50 years..
