Your post reads very much like a lot of conversations I have with customers who have diagnosed the fault themselves and can get the parts for a fraction of the cost I am charging him (on the internet).
I have nothing to hide and I can live with what I charge people(which should be more). I just hate having to justify myself to these people so in most cases I don't bother. I ensure every customer is quoted for initial diagnostics and is kept fully aware of costs as the job progresses, if they can get bits on the internet they take the car away, pay me for time spent on job so far and fit their own (cheap) parts.
needless to say few take that option.
Let them get on with their job and you get on with yours, you will earn more money that way with less grief.
