And with Hull (where John is) being reported today with the highest un-employment rate, I can see why prices are being very depressed in that area. If I was not in the trade, I would certainly not go for the cheapest price MOT because I would view them with suspicion, but somewhere in the middle. In my own field of expertise, I have not increased prices in line with inflation for the last couple of years for fear of being too un-competitive. My retained customers would probably pay whatever I charge within reason, but with new customers, I sometimes offer a lesser involved diagnostic service at a cheaper rate. The ramifications of which is fully explained at the time. This, enables me to build on my customer base and then charge a more realistic rate when/if times take an upward turn.
And the belt tightening exercise continues....
