Posted by Steve Nicholas on October 10, 2006, 12:06 am, in reply to "Broken timing belt " I was in a situation last year when a belt I had fitted turned out to be the wrong spec for the job but was supplied to me as the correct application. The belt failed. I was fortunate in that the complaint was not from the person I had done the work for, but a subsequent purchaser of the car. I believe that he was just trying it on. Basically, I told him to take a hike and I heard no more. I did get a lot of support from UKAT members. Good luck, Steve

Posted by Dave Hill on October 10, 2006, 8:46 pm, in reply to "Re: Broken timing belt " I always put a note on my service invoices even if it’s a regular car. Text as follows........... "TIMING BELT HISTORY UNKNOWN, PLEASE ADVISE". It draws attention to the issue & brings allot of cam belt work in. Good luck mate. (I don't know about the £50 Kev/Dave) Just kidding, we have to stick together. Regards Dave

Re: Broken timing belt
Posted by Tony Bickers on October 13, 2006, 6:49 pm, in reply to "Re: Broken timing belt " Cambelts are becoming a real dilemma nowadays due to the cost involved with associated repairs running to hundreds of pounds if not more !If you look in detail at the manufacturers advice regarding belts you would inspect them every day ! I tell all my customers of the risk and expense whenever they are considering buying a new/used vehicle, we are all aware of the high risk motors, ford 1800 diesels, ecotec vauxhalls, every single Renault on the road, to name but a few,I recently had a 1200 Clio in for service only an 8 valve with 68000 on the clock,no history, as others have said I told him the consequences and 2 weeks later the belt went, he was gutted as was his wallet cos the total bill was around £500, but, and this is the crux, I had told him !!!, with everything that goes with this type of job, the moral being if you tell them and they do nothing then the ball is in their court. For some reason I have found Renault to be the most mileage sensitive vehicles on the road, 20 miles over the reccomended change and they break !The 16v 98 on Laguna's on are a 48000 or 4 year change, as bad as GM with the ecotec's. I now find myself doing a lot of complex belt changes for other garages in my area because they do not want the liability, I have spent hundreds on belt tension gauges and timing kits and do not refuse any of these jobs but make VERY clear I change the belt and whatever ancillaries I deem necessary, ie Water pump, tensioner pulleys, aux. pulleys as an extra , so far this approach has worked for me because no one wants a huge repair bill for a wrecked engine. I will also help if you suffer financial consequences, there but for the grace of god go all of us ! regards Tony

Re: Broken timing belt
Posted by John Kennard on October 23, 2006, 7:15 pm, in reply to "Re: Broken timing belt " Very few customers resist this advise. We have only learnt this through bitter experience and we now rarely ever do a belt without now replacing the water pump on all European vehicles. You can get away with it on Japanese engines but we still warn. A little time and care to explain this at the time of booking creates more work, shows off your professional attitude, explains why your costing is more than the competition and saves you much grief in the future. As for stickers we have all these warnings built into our standard job lists as we are computerized they are automatically attached to all our servicing work or timing belt jobs so they never fail to appear and we don't have to think about them. To date we have over 60 warning messages attached to various jobs we narrate on the computer. I cannot stress enough especially in todays trading climate how much you need to cover your back.
