2 Day Technical Conferance - Harrogate 21 & 22 Feb 2009 #

Hi lads, anyone going to the Frank Massey tech conferance in Harrogate in Feb?
It'd be good to put faces to names and looks like a good event.

A question for all lads.

How come the internet is full of automotive forums with techs asking the same questions over + over ie
What does this fault code mean?
How does this system work?
How do I test this part?
Can I take this job on as I'm not sure what I need?
What should this read on live data?
etc etc etc

Yet when you ask who is going to any training/info related events there is either no responce or negative responce's like
I'm too busy, its expensive, I cant close up during the week to attend,its too far away etc etc

Then the same people moan about talk of codes been brought in to regulate our trade but yet make no effort to keep up to date.

I cant understand this reluctance to learn about the things we do everyday.If you don't understant something then surly you would want to learn about it.
Yes there is alot you can learn by yourself with the correct info on the system,and taking it apart to figure out, but there is nothing as good as being taught the system by the people who developed it or by the people who work on it weekly if not daily.

Explainations please as it makes no sense to me

i live down the bottom end of cornwall(everywhere is to far to travel)
i am rebuilding the garage (no money or time)
i am stacked with work (no time)
4 kids (no money or time)
i am a one man band (no one to cover for me)
having said that i have about 18 "certificates"here for training courses in the last two years
my problem is i love my job the more i can learn the better and i hate being beat
some of the courses i have been on havent been that great to be honest but i always find i learn something new even if its from the people who go on the courses with me

and of course thats not including shows like mechanex etc which is a must with 4 kids

Hi Sean

I have personally attended 3 Bosch courses this year and spent the day at Brands Hatch for the Technical Workshop, if i choose not to attend the Technical Weekend in Harrogate it does not make me unwilling to learn!!. I did work out that it would be 1 day traveling up, 2 day conference and a 4th day traveling back at a cost of around £500:00 for the 4 days.......in this current climate Garage owner's will want maximum bang for their buck in regard to Technical pep talks

There is no way you can know how many training courses or technical days members have attended, some garage owners have spent thousands on sending their staff on courses over the last few years, it is unfair to assume that a lack of response to a post means we are not doing our bit "Off-Line"

I travel from Ireland 4/5 times a year to do courses/workshops in UK because over here they are in general quite poor, as you can imagine this is quite expensive and takes up alot of time, both work time and family time. Don't tar us all with the one brush

Morning all,
The question was a general question not aimed at anyone in person but at a general group of techs who do not attend training but still want to repair systems they dont understand and always find an excuse why they "cant" make the training.
I was NOT talking about people who do attend training throughtout the year as and when they can whether its two courses or ten courses the point is you're at least trying.I'm talking about the people who do not try but expect a silver bullet when they take on something they know nothing about.

Martin and Mark are perfect examples of what I'm talking about here,they have all the odds against them but still make the training as they see they require.
I moved countries to get my basic training for the reasons Mark stated and ended up staying here.

Peter you seem to have taken this as a personal dig which is not what was intended,I had addressed the question to all for everone's thoughts on it.
I should have started a seperate thread for it in hindsight now as it was in relation to any training not a specific course but thats hindsight for you.

The FMN runs training courses throughout the year which I have attended and met alot of excellant techs.UKAT has arranged one course that I'm aware of (CAN BUS by Dearborn systems) that was arranged by James Mc Callum (I think).I attended it and again met some excellant techs.The sites are two differant resources and cant be directly compared for training events I dont think.
My original post was in hope of meeting some of the guys on here from over the years that I have alot of respect for and putting a face to the name.I have been a member on here for a lot longer than I have been a member of the FMN but I have met alot more of my fellow techs from the FMN due to training.

I have a deep pride in what I do as I suspect alot of people on here do and sometimes it gets to you when you repeatly see people getting money taken off them to 'guess' repair by techs who know nothing about the system they are working on but still take the money to not fix the car and in doing so give us all a bad name.

This has been going on since the invention of the horseless carriage. The very best will always be outnumbered by the mediocre and no amount of campaigning will prevent it. It's not possible to change human nature.

There are quite a few techs out there that would like to go on training courses, but this is not always withing their control

I have a garage down the road from me that has 4 techs working there, they quite often phone or call in with various diagnostic problems. I have spoken to them about training courses, they seem very keen but their problem is their boss, he does not seem to grasp that he is loosing business through lack of training (head in the sand springs to mind). Another problem is that they only have a KTS, non of the techs went on the training course that come with it

So it is not always the fault of the techs not wanting to learn, unless they took a days holiday and paid for it themselves, its the garage owners that need a kick up the bum

The flip side of the coin is that their lack of training brings me in additonal business. If garages around you were all trained to your stanadard, then you would find yourself in a price war over who can fix the cheapest.......so sometimes a lack of training can be an advantage

In the back of the mind of a lot of small garage proprietors, is the worry that a lot of time, effort and money can be spent training someone only to have them leave to work for a competitor or even set-up just down the road. Having trained someone to a high level, good pay and conditions are not always enough to retain them.
It's happened to me and I suspect quite a few others.

I agree with Sean, It always amazes me when I attend training courses and they are often under subscribed. I have had courses cancelled on me through lack of numbers. In these days of changing technology I would expect courses to be over subscribed. I managed six separate courses in 2008 a total of 16 days at a cost of £1900. I am putting together my training schedule for 2009 at the moment. I must admit that finding decent training courses is a problem.

Yes it is a problem to try to balance time off for training against the costs incurred - both money & time.
This year i have had 3 day visits to Autologic 1 weekend & 1 network evening with Frank Massey & 2 Saturdays with James Dillon for myself & 2 days for my two workers. The costs will frighten me if I add them up , but without keeping up we will be left behind. All the training is quite a distance from home so travel & accomodation are big costs too. Thankfully SPX have invested 20million just down the road in Gloucester so thats good!!
Back to your original thread Sean yes I am going to Harrogate - managed to book a cheaper hotel in the same road ( Azalea Court ) so I will hopefully meet up & join you for an irn bru!

There does seem to be a common thread running through a lot of the posts regarding training. There are mostly written by techs in the first person. i.e. I went on this or that course, I couldn't do that course because it was cancelled and so on.
How many send their employees for training on a regular basis rather than attend themselves? Of those that do, do they calculate the payback time?
Once accomodation, course fees and travel expenses are paid, plus loss of revenue for absent employees, it is quite a finacial burden for the smaller business.

In reply to Sean's post i will be at the Frank Massey conference , personally i have always looked upon training as part of my business expenses much the same as updates to equipment and subscriptions to data ,they are all equally important to stay ahead in the Diagnostic world

The worry that I have about sending any of my guys on any courses, is that I reckon they would see it as a day off or an excuse for a "jollie"! The people who gain the most from these courses are the ones who are dead keen on self development & unfortunately they are a rare breed.

You get out what you put in I reckon, & I am often disappointed when I test the dedication of my staff. Most of them would benefit from taking the "Fundamentals Of Motor Vehicle Technology" book home & reading it cover to cover. I have offered them the book to read & still it remains in the drawer of my desk

On the subject of training courses. On the few that I have attended, I have learned how systems work & how to test & measure critical components. However it would be good to do some tests on systems with faults, although I understand that this creates some practical problems. Maybe waveforms taken from faulty vehicles could be used to demonstrate what can go wrong in the field.

I think a lot use forums instead of investing their time and money in training ( they would rather let others invest time and money)

Again they rely on others to invest their time and money to get this training and info.

The people I refer to here are DIY and cowboys, not the ones that have invested time and money. (these are the ones that should be allowed to be a members of a forum.)

I live in Cornwall and would not want to be anywhere else in great britain, so I regard the travelling as worth it just to be here. Over the last 4 years have spent a lot of money and around 24-26 weeks on courses (could be more). Time and money is important but training is also very important.

Can anyone help me to understand why some techs are willing to give free advice on problems to what seems to be private motorists and cowboys on certain forums, would they do the same if these people came into their workshop and asked the same questions? (give advice, and tell them how to repair their vehicle, all free of charge).

Training employees, I guess if you employ then you have to take that chance.

As for courses not taking place because of lack of numbers, I have waited 3 years for a course to run but have still done it when it did run.

Would it really take 4 days to cover the Harrogate conference, London is 250 miles closer then St Austell, I shall leave Friday afternoon and travel back Sunday night. I do take your views about time and money but is there a choice?

. But not until I spent quite a bit of money trying to train him up. From now on i will go and maby one of my techs but I will always look after #1

Thats Funny, I did exactly that, I tried Training an Ex Mechanic into becoming an Electrician / Diagnostic guy.

He wanted to go on Every training course going, ( Really he wanted to do anything that did not involve work ) He also used to come and go as he felt like it and thought he was indespensible.

so "WE" went on several courses, The courses were Brilliant and always learnt Me / Us something But when I gave him a Complicated job his reply was what do you think I am, a Fxxxing Specialist just because i have been on a 2 day course. ????. ( several guys on here will remember him )

Luckily he handed his notice in and it was the biggest relief that i have ever had. but i spent plenty on training courses and lost time, but i am glad that i did it for myself.

on the other hand i have 3 other employees that don't want to go on courses as they know everything already.

Well that is untill they waste hours on a simple job that they should have fixed in half an hour.

hi andy,

being new to this game i signed up to this with it being relatively local to me!

i am the first to admit that i need more training but i can not afford to things properly at the minute. this weekend truely opened my eyes just how much i don't know!

watching frank massey at work was something else, that man does know his stuff, and even though the weekend was a pr exercise i have learned alot!

i WILL be attending ads @ preston for training in the near future because frank can teach me so much more! just speaking to people that were there taught me a lot!

for the money you cannot beat it!

and jean!

i would like to thank frank, jean, dave and everybody else that made the weekend pass seamlessly.

Well what can I say? Carlsberg don't do technical seminars but if they did, they would get ADS to run it

The high points for me were, Frank's presentation on waveform analysis,Stuart White's presentation on marketing (unfortunately cut short), Keith Geach straight talking about everything diesel

and last but not least the lingerie models (I kid you not

)
Unfortunatly I had a bad dose of man flu and lost my voice, but mayby it was just as well or i may have stayed at the bar bulls~@"ing till the wee hours

.great to meet new people,put faces to names and some mates from preivous courses.A very genuine thanks to all at ADS.
