Thank you all for your responses. Customer cannot find engine code to verify dephaser pulley problem. Looking at AD for this vehicle, it show 4 engine codes and under-bonnet layout has no mention of this set-up. However, trawling through the archives indicates that this could be the problem considering the symptoms. I would also be interested to know how easy it is (or otherwise) to carry out the crank sensor and wiring modifications. Finally, this vehicle suffered another flat battery yesterday. Something is going on there. Expect to revisit on Sunday.
