Ford Focus 1.6 Zetec 2002 - CAT Poor efficiency Archived Message

    Hi all,

We had this car in about a month ago. Customer said it had been misifing which was fixed at another garage and now the MIL was on with a "P0420 Bank 1 Cat efficiency below limit" DTC.

Car was running fine, but if I remember correctly emissions were just out of limit, so we fitted a new CAT from CES.

Car is now back with same fault. No evidence of a misfire. On live data both O2 sensors are switching, though the rear one is nearly as fast as the front one which would indicate not much converting go on in the CAT.

The CAT looks undamaged, and the inlet and outlet temps differ by only 20degs. These CATs are quite small in size. We will scope the O2 sensors tomorrow. We have another (non genuine) CAT to fit, but obviously concerned that this may not be the problem. Surely the fueling can't be out such that the CAT won't work, but O2 sensors still switch and no other fault codes set?

Can't find any TSBs on this....was wondering if there was a problem with ECM that required a reflash? Or is it a case of just fit the OEM CAT? I know you get what you pay for when it comes to CATs....this one was about £140

    Thanks

    Sean
