The predominant failure mode for high mileage catalysts is chemical deterioration (phosphorus deposition on the front brick of the catalyst), not thermal deterioration. as above it is a chemical failure of the cat and the reflashing of the ecu extend the time factor for the front to rear lambda threshold change until the cat has run longer to pass the catalyst efficiency test.
