    Hi Paul

I believe that I heard about the injector coding problem at Mechanex, Sandown Park, late 2006.

There was a very useful talk given by a diesel specialist, who covered the new technology in particular.

The injector codes relate to the characteristics of that particular injector - they are now mass-produced and not to a calibration standard. This helps to increase the production rate and reduce cost per unit.

It means that the characteristics of each injector then have to be assessed and the injector given the code, which describes its switching time, fuel delivery rate and so on.

The sophistication of the engine management means that the control system can then use each injector's code to determine exactly how to control it to deliver the specified amount of fuel.

Precise fuel metering is essential for emissions control and to provide the critical pre, main and post injection phases required for these engines to start, run and maintain efficiency throughout their operating ranges. I don't have to tell you this though, you have just had a demonstration!

Why the codes become corrupted was not explained -it may be inexplicable at this time since the technology is so new. However, a best guess is that there may be design flaws in the control systems, either software or hardware.

It may be that the manufacturers are not admitting the problem yet (remember all the Zetec engine problems in the early days?). When they do then there may be an answer - perhaps software updates or hardware (ECU) mods.

    Regards,

    Steve
