I'm not sure I think comparing something that's not been achieved yet, to something that exists at the moment; that is membership of the EU - despite its faults - to a set of vague ideas, hopes and atttudes, many of them contradictory depending on whether one is on the left or right... is really the same thing at all. People in the UK, depending on how 'nationalistic' one was, or credulous, appear to have voted to leave for a lot of different reasons. Did the left vote for the same reasons as the right? I don't think anyone argues that do they? What Tusk is talking about is how unprepared and un-thought through the whole process was, which is why there are so many difficulties now. Take the Labour Party's new position. It amounts to continued relationship to the EU that's close to being a form of membership in all but name, which is what Norway has opted for. That's not what people seem to have voted for, is it? I dunno. I just find this whole thing in the UK, disheartening, complex, overwhelming and above all a colossal waste of time and effort, which could be more intelligently used for something else, like dealing with the real challenges we face. This is why people in Europe are surprised and aghast at what's happening in the UK, they thought the British were more sensible and pragmatic, not inclined towards the various forms of emotional romantic nationalism that have traditionally caused such havoc in mainland Europe.
