"I think the Brexit vote was protest against poverty, yes and overcrowding, against the idea that there is no alternative on a whole raft of issues." Most people would accept that a protest vote was the case for a minority of Brexit votes. There's a tendency not to blame your fellows when you can blame outsiders for your troubles: the ground was of course well laid by decades of UK mainstream media EU scapegoating. In that respect its a dual triumph for the British media and elite: they managed to deflect the blame for the mismanagement and misrule mess of the UK for which they rightly deserved to be excoriated, onto foreigners and in doing so also entrenched and enhanced their own powers. Smuggled Duty Free trebles all around!
