No, I think it is you who misunderstands me. I haven't taken my phone off the hook, and I don't limit my reading to religious literature! If you put books and telephones in the same category as social media, you fail to grasp the issue. Even from a materialistic view, they are totally different categories. Informing oneself, truly, is impossible in a technopoly, which is what it is. In a real democracy, we inform ourselves through direct participation in activities and meetings etc. Even there, truth takes digging because interest groups will deceive. Frank Zappa is the only one who said it brilliantly, clearly, and truly: "I get my information from the same sources you do. The difference is I've learned how to see through the spin." It is always a challenge to arrive at the unvarnished truth. But it is relatively easy peasy to detect a lie - if one is willing to smell them out. I've already laid out my argument about "information" explicitly here over the years. People aren't really misinformed or ill-informed or under-informed. That's just a symptom of the state of soul and consciousness in the average person. There is the lie, and then there is the believer. What makes some people believe the liar, and others smell fish? In my experience observing and knowing people, information/knowledge/education has almost nothing to do with it except perhaps in the negative (the more people "know" the stupider they become). And I must also add - social media is awesomely addictive (I use 'awesome' in the literal sense). Entire lives are wasted chasing after information and 'connection' that just ain't there.) Reading is a solitary activity. Telephone calls are one on one. Let's be honest. turtleman
