Dear Rich, It is my belief and/or understanding :-) that only subscribers can post comments on Dmitri's site!
Also, I think the other points in Orlov's article can be explained away but I did not want to be too long winded.
Radiation takes many forms: Charged particles from the sun (solar wind) and charged particles from space (higher energy cosmic rays or particles).
The solar wind is concentrated by a planetary magnetic field which protects the planet but concentrates the radiation in belts around it. The moon doesn't really have a mag field cos its made of basalt with only a tiny iron core (it is made from bassalt sploshed off the earth 4 billion yrs ago, earth's iron had settled to the core and did't really splosh). So the moon gets bombarded with solar wind during the lunar day, and the way around it is/was not to stay for very long. No, space suits would not be protective from high energy ratiation.
The apollo astronauts, I recall, did comment on a lot of flashes in the eyes when trying to sleep. This is cerenkov radiation, I think.
I think there really may be a minor Russian disinfo campaign on Apollo. Both Orlov and the saker seem to be singing from the same hymn book. I think it is retribution for the west revisiting the history of ww2, especially with ukraine saying Hitler had to invade the USSR, which is q sick and outrageous comment on the unmatched sacrifice of the soviet people. I think it is understandable that they are getting retribution by sowing doubt on apollo, but for myself, as a person who has a strong exploratory instinct, and who is impressed by meticulous work that pays off, I just think its a bit sad.
Russians have lived on space stations in low earth orbit for over a year with no long-term ill effects, so they should know better than to talk like this.
