Did we have remote controls for TV, gates, in the 70s? From what I can gather from the dreaded Wikipedia, prior to 1977, most remote control devices operated off "ultrasonic" tech; after 1978 "infra-red" was introduced. Worth noting that the Russians explored the moon in 1970 with unmanned vehicle LUNOKHOD1, described as the world's "first roving, remote-controlled robot to land on another celestial body".
