Cheers mack. Life is short, so in a sense I can understand John's incapacity to engage with science of this event. Time, effort etc. But then, for example, when I (very) occasionally broach the subject of steel temperatures for WTC7 and such, with my structural colleagues, there is silence, perhaps a knowing look ... and then nothing. Ruined careers and reputations at the back of their minds? … especially if you are earning your bread in conservative industries like ours. One has to be pretty high up in a hierarchy to stand up and be counted. We mostly do the work and keep our head down : ). We don’t do papers, we do calcs. The papers that I did in my youth were, although on the cutting edge of something or other, laughably tame in comparison to WTC7 collapse that one has to perform in the peer review environment and (probably) alphabet soup entities looking over one’s shoulders. I still hope we are to get something from Dr. Hulsey though. Seems to be like waiting for Corbyn to appear in No. 10 : ). But seriously, in my experience using BS standards for office fires a while back, 600 C was the rule, like you said. I think in the EN code it may have jumped to 850 C. Try as I might, I cannot remember anything higher than 1200 C … for the hydrocarbon fires (gas jets) though … needs checking. Wikipedia quotes that parametric max. for office fires as 1000 C. So if NIST came up with 1100 C they were presumably proposing a relatively new limit : ). I know nothing ... and still not enough for 1500 C melting point. Like you say, it may come back to its original yield point. However, what I found interesting is how the E values rapidly tend to zero as one progresses up from 600 odd C. However, with low-temperature scenario like that i.e. 600 C, it should have been a progressive collapse because of elasticity (if at all possible ... and historically it never happened before : )). It didn’t happen and it was a free-fall. Never mind the evidence from credible witnesses like fire-fighters attesting they have seen kinetic runs of molten steel. Ignore and forge on with the official conspiracy. Frustrating, but it could be worse . Cheers
