"... to mean anything, democracy should include access to good information about your choices - when you look at the way our information is so controlled by small groups..." -The heart of the matter. I remember many years ago seeing a UK TV program where they gathered a group of ordinary Joes and Joans and had a poll about the death penalty to find that the majority were for. They went on to give people real information about the subject and allowed the same group collectively to have genuine informed debate about it. Then had a new poll which gave: surprise, surprise... the reverse of the original result with most opposing it. Its not just that public are poorly informed, its that the media culture that surrounds us is indeed controlled by those "small groups" -almost exclusively groups controlling large amounts of money, who deliberately misinform the public and campaign to achieve the result that they desire: results that are so often antithetical to the collective needs and well-being of the citizenry . Democracy doesn't mean anything without a genuinely well informed public. It shouldn't even need pointed out on a forum that only exists because some of us are aware of that deficit: that the public are systematically and seriously deliberately misinformed in a way that is frankly criminal.
