That's all true, up to a point. But 'it', the triumph of socialism doesn't seem to have happened, does it? Does it look like socialism is around the corner? I realise this doesn't sound optimsitic about the future, that's because I'm not optimistic about the future. I think we're moving backwards towards a form of 'fuedalism' or a social system that reminds one of ancient Rome. Christianity didn't save Rome from collapse and I don't think soislism will save us from a similar fate. What I'd prefer, though that really doesn't cover it, is rule by at the very least a competent elite, rather than a hopelessly bad one determined not to face the myriad challenges we face. Masses of people, the demos can have influence on the elite and always have in a way, but they cannot have real power, because power by its nature only exists or is expressed through elite rule. This, I fear, is even truer today, where we have these mass societies that are so fragmented and polarised. Greek democracy only applied to smallish city states, after all, not great, lumbering, mass states. It's not that I'm totally against democracy. I think it's a nice idea, an ideal. It's just that I'm increasingly concerned about how it's implimented these days, days full of Trump and Johnson. Some on the left say that the EU is 'unreformable' and therefore doomed. I wonder the same thing about liberal democracy. But I think what comes next will be much worse, a return to a pre-democratic 'fuedal-style' order.
