(Sorry to cut in keith) - You're ascribing a lot to liberal capitalism there - how much of the alleged overall increase in wealth would have happened anyway due to technology changes? How much of that technology really required a free market to get going? (i'm thinking state-funded computer ddevelopment). How do you know it wouldn't have been a bigger increase under a different system? (china managed better/quicker, even if it's arguably just a tweak of our system). Even if the overall wealth goes up, if it's not distributed equitably, it's unsurprising that people at the bottom end won't be so enamoured of the benefits we're told endlessly about. We'll rightly laugh if you say 'well you could be worse off' and answer 'we could all be better off without anyone losing anything important'. It's like telling the sweatshop worker to be grateful because if there wasn't a sweatshop they'd still be in the mudhuts our imperialist policies put/keep them in.
