She said that. Holistic change Liberal media is happy for one to say all sorts of things, but not so happy when you actually start pushing to achieve concrete goals. So the worry is that we all listen to Greta who says a lot that is valid ... but no real solutions are really offered, beyond youngsters striking on Fridays? I've been trying to find out what proposals/ solutions she points to? This doesn't mean I don't support Greta and the climate change discussion: it just means I also keep an eye out for who is offering what solutions, from within this orbit. We travelled through an impoverished area in eastern South Africa recently. Hungry people near an indigenous forest stood on the side of the road, selling passersby wood from chopped-down yellowwood trees - ancient specimens in a rare native forest that should be preserved. On closer inspection, these hungry people were also selling sheaves of wild arum lilies to passing highway traffic, plucked from the wetland. This made us sad as these lilies are home to the precious, rare arum lily frog. These poor people know nothing of 'climate change' and destruction. They are hungry and need to eat. Canadian and Australian mining companies (threatening dunes) in their areas - along with super-rich grabs of land to turn into gated golf course estates and game farms for rich tourists - have disrupted locals and rendered them invisible. The neo-lib SA govt - plugged into casino capitalism - has not filtered money and social help to this beautiful eastern region. As a journalist reporting on this area, is it one's duty to first write about climate change - or should one first focus on the humans inadvertently contributing to the problem due to deep inequality fostered by a greedy, inter-connected global system that's failed them? If Greta came on a tour through Africa with press and photographers in tow, posing on global mining company's sites and so on, would mainstream media still have her on the front cover of Time magazine (as Assange once was before word went out to "pile on him" in 2012)?
