It's not purity, but fatigue. My daughter has the grades and wants to become a doctor. I've told her the universities she's interested in which are in London, I couldn't even afford her accommodation on the money I make, let alone food books transport costs etc. While the imbalance between rich and poor is so great, that is the reality. All we get by chasing dreams is mental health problems. You don't get anywhere by oscillating between unfounded hopes and nightmares. It simply keeps the equilibrium from breaking point (for the people). I'm describing my own position, but also that of countless others. Ignoring that - ignoring the fact that the party were investing our hope in is constantly not standing up for us uncompromisingly - is the same ignorance the democrats in the us displayed prior to trump getting in. At this stage I'd be surprised if corbyn came close to winning, but if he did I'd expect to see nearly all but the concessionary changes shelved on his victory. To make revolutionary changes you would need a revolutionary leader, and a staff under him of revolutionary MPs. I don't see either, and I'm sure many others don't either. Will wages rise, council taxes go down? Will the nhs be secured and other previous national services be renationalised? Unlikely (particularly remaining in the eu under labour), and will not just university admissions but cost of living for students be funded until the wealth is equalised? Is such even on their agenda? There is no proposals for escape from the capitalist model, and that is the thing that's killing the poorest of us. Labour still planning to fund trident! I can't see any great changes (particularly with likely hung parliament) and nor can I see a great flood of new voters coming out to prevent that from happening. When you're wondering why the money doesn't stretch to decent food for the week,, your priorities tend to be less on political dancing and more on harsh realities. Add to that the fact that so many zero hours contracts means that folk who are working won't be taking the afternoon off to vote, and it's unlikely there will be new droves of voters. I'm not saying don't vote, I'm saying there are more out there who have decided there is no point, and saying it isn't so doesn't make it not so.
