What the baboon situation suggests though is that stressed populations create wing-waiters and that once the 'alphas' have gone, so to does the need to 'step up' as there's no longer the binary choice of be an alpha or suffer. What it also tells us of course, is that the bastards have to go. I bought a dog a few years ago. When looking into training him, I came across an interesting article that discussed how just about everything we take for granted with dogs, i.e., that you've got to alpha their arse, comes from studies of wolves. Trouble is, by all rights, the conclusions came from studying a captive pack, which, the author maintained, behaved differently because it was stressed by its captivity and that wolves in the wild behave far differently, being much more family-like in their behavioural dynamic. I've also read accounts by some farmers who maintain that unstressed fox populations are less of a concern for them. So it appears, not surprisingly really, that stressed individuals and stressed populations generate acute negative behavioural patterns and it's hard to see any reason why it shouldn't be this way for all living creatures, including us!
