It irked me too that objecting to cultural destruction implied that actual human destruction was in relative terms somehow more acceptable. Peoples lives are more important than bricks and mortar, but cultural targets as a whole can't run away and represent an easy way to inflict collective & psychological damage: "hollowing out" the Empires remaining opponents.
