I was listening to a debate on the radio the other day with three women discussing trans' rights and they were all, not surprisingly perhaps, very much on the side of a man's right to be recognised as a woman (and vice versa), except, when it came to women-only spaces and there's the rub. Ironically, a woman identifying as a man or vice versa (I've come here for a Monty Python sketch...) necessarily limits biological men's and women's identity. "I feel like a woman." What does that mean? Put twenty women in a room and I doubt they could define or agree with what feeling like a woman is. Certainly I would find it hard to define my manliness. Unless of course, you use cliched cultural dictates, but then I would probably cease to be a man; male, yes, but not a man. Once you start to narrow down what feeling like a man or woman is in order to identify as a specific gender, you necessarily limit the scope of my ability to be male and identify as a man. This does suggest the more progressive solution if one is needed though; i.e., you are biologically male or female, but after that, fill your boots.
