Checked your figures. Yep, in the USA it is 500,000 per annum for cancer and 300,000 per for covid (so far). Arguably, March 2020 can be taken as starting point for covid in the USA, so one can expect roughly 400,000 covid deaths there annually.

    You say:
I would say that while we can say we don’t need a new source of illness to kill us, the question is why the focus is extreme on covid and hardly at all on cancers.

Realistically, the cancer etc. deaths have been normalised and accepted (we all know why, boiling frogs and all that). In any case you answer this yourself:

I'd say, because its new and it happened quick …

    I agree. You continue:

It does seem we have become obsessed with our mortality but it also seems quite logical that in order to push lockdowns and new order, you must keep the fear up.

It may have an outward appearance of ‘obsession’ with ‘our’ mortality. It’s a relatively wide-sweeping statement. It may deflect from an observation that the principal segments of the population suffering here are elderly, weak and working class.

I also get it about the fear factor and the control of the population. But hiding behind that is the fact that the measures taken by PTB are inadequate. This is the central point of that article.

Here, in the UK, these measures have been half-arsed, laissez-faire and not in the interest of the bulk of the population. Remember Bozo’s statement ‘we’ll take it on the chin’ and get the (natural) herd immunity?

Essentially, two major solutions are possible; don’t do anything (as advocated by PTB initially) or adopt a focused approach of eradication. The latter has been absolute shambles. Compare and contrast with East Asian experience of eradication. Just look at the Test and Trace fiasco here.

Completely agree that we have wrong priorities imposed on us by turbo-capitalism and have had this for ever. And that goes for most of the issues that we chew fat over here, illnesses, social disparity, control of the resources - the list is endless.
