I don't think herd immunity is likely to be a thing in the way that it's been proposed Archived Message

ie, I don't think everyone has the vaccine and then we are done is likely although maybe. I have said several times over the months - immunity to previously endemic coronaviruses wane over a year or so. Children are a constant reservoir and viruses roll around in schools almost continuously. Don't see why it should be different with this coronavirus. Already we know that antibodies aren't maintained - anecdotal but several friends of friends have had covid 19 twice. As before, eventually everybody will have their trial by ordeal. Hopes for the vaccine are 1. Lasting immunity for some. 2. Reduce rate of spread in next winters wave - a transient herd effect. 3. Reduced severity of subsequent infection for those without persistent full immunity. If we are relying on the vaccine I think this is the best case. Derek is right - in a relatively unvaccinated population which lives close together even if only a small part of the whole - that population will remain at risk and also a potential reservoir for selecting new strains. The reluctance of minorities to be vaccinated isn't a puzzle. They know they've been lied to. They know they are discriminated against. They know as a result their mortality is way higher. Now the same people who've been killing them are telling them they must be vaccinated. Because outcomes are poor we have people regularly thinking if we take them to itu we're going to kill them. Having conversations at end of life can be a challenge if families are convinced you are having the conversation because to save money. One of the best things about my job is that I get to spend thousands if not tens of thousands of pounds saving the lives of people who have nothing and who would be denied care in the US.
