I mean my main issue with dance orientated genre funk/disco/techno etc, is the prioritisation of groove over melody and overly repetitious music that lacks any elements of contrast and dramatic arc and at the time be boring as a result Disco theoretically with its root more firmly in pop music will predispose songwriters to have more emphasis on vocal hooks and also to keep their song somewhat compact so that it can be played on the radio which would prevent overly repetitive music. This would limit stuff like “Don’t call me n***er Whitey” or “sex machine” from appearing on disco records Theoretically disco may be a more appealing genre to my taste Now my heretic hot take Funk seems to work best when combined with prog or art rock where they introduce variation, development/build up and contrast and combine it with funky groove. My favourite funk track will probably be Gentle Giant Proclamation followed by Can Halleluhwah. Gentle Giant is probably the greatest writers of groove based music in rock history :) |
