There's a guy I, and many others, know who we swear can smell the fish. No matter where, when or the weather, he'll be there or thereabouts the most successful on the beach. I studied him for a few months one year...very interesting to actually just sit down (next to your rod) and watch someone fish, and I mean really watch. What he looks at, what he reacts to, what he does and when. Why is he doing that? What! We're leaving already! WTF?

So after this period of careful observation I realised the following:

    1. He was ALWAYS EXTREMELY ORGANISED and didn't f**k around tying traces, thawing bait, tying knots, rigging up, had pre tied baits, knew where all his gear was all the time. Efficiency plus.
    2. He watched his rods very carefully, but did not necessarily react instantaneously. He would often wait for longer than you would consider appropriate before picking it up and having a good old feel before [maybe] striking.
    3. He [mostly]used FRESH BAIT
    4. He fished at what he thought was a good sot at the best time and if nothing happened he would move on to the next best time and spot. Eventually he'd catch fish.
    5. He was intense. In preparation, baiting, casting and catching. He also said "Yep" a lot when playing his fish
    6. He loved, and I mean LOVED, catching fish. That simple.

In saying all this though I still he think he can smell them. Or maybe calls to them secretly when no one is listening. "Here snap, snap, snappity, snaphausen".

My other theory is that he has a fish doll at home that he pokes pins into on Fridays...

So Trev, I think it's probably a combination of all your points, but only a small portion of each. Incremental improvement in all aspects will give the most reward.

    Peace mine fishing brothers.
