I think success comes down to how much you want something. Anyone can catch a fish, but a person who does well at anything, generally wants it. If your driven enough, results follow.

I think its a mixture of allot of factors. Luck, time, transport ect.... Most of all motivation and attitude.

George M from BOP is a great example, man that guy can fish. I have watch a few people fish, but that bugger silently woo's the buggers in. Very rare if he miss's out on a prize at a comp. He's a gentleman too, only to happy to chat about what he is doing.

I don't think money is a big deal, there are plenty of broke fisherman out there that are good at what they do. Having a quad is good, but not the answer to catching more fish. Reading the water is difficulty a handy tool, and perhaps one of the biggest things. Experience turns many bad trips as well as the good, to having a better understanding of where the fish are most likely to be. Motivation keeps fresh baits out in the water always and pushes you to cast that extra meter when you have to get over a bar.

Casting, having a big cast is a good thing, not a sole answer to fishing as many of the fish at whakaki were caught 15 meters out.... Anyone can cast over 100m if they set there gear up for it. It's not about how big or strong you are. Chris Spurr comes with me from time to time, that guy is built like a wippet, but man he can get his rod humming when he tiffs a bait.

Bait selection on the beach is always good, but 90% of all fish caught in your area on two baits. HB it is Pilchards and Bonito- Unless ya want sharks then its cray ect... BOP you know if you go there to take anchovies. So having the right bait is good, having every bait under the sun is not necessary.

Time is a biggie, you know the fish bite harder over the last 3 hours of light and into dark, and from 5am to 10am in the mornings..... So very little fish get caught during the day unless ya want kahawai, but for most, sitting in the sun with their young kids is the sole reason they go fishing, not so much to catch a few fish. So their are a lot of ways

The guys who tend to catch more don't so much fish more, but as racepics said, fish at the right time as they are there for the fish.

In BOP you know the fish are going to run over the change of light and well into dark with some of the best fishing going from 1am to 3am. So the motivated will stay up and fish on filling there bins while the rest of us sleep.

    Interesting topic though.
