Hi Guys and Girls Going to the NZACA Executive Meeting in Rotorua on Saturday. Any-one got any important subjects that they want me to have discussed.

Rules set in concrete for next years nats in regards to the definition of private access. For example, lottin point, pretty much anyone can go there, but permission to enter the land is required

Allot of the coast is like this. Will these areas be accessible, or are they deemed to be private land.

I was considering entering and going door knocking for access, I am just wondering what has been set in place for this, what is deemed a no go, and what is ok.

Its a grey area though. If I go and ask Joe blogs if I can fish on the back of his property, and he says its all good too I am hardly going to tell others or advertise where I am fishing....... Understandably. Not only competition but for future reference.

Allot of the GIsborne coast boundary is private, and most of the better fishing falls into this.

I believe you ether cut all private access- defined as an area you need permission to fish, or you allow all of it. After all, if im fishing on Joe blogs land, chances are no one else will find it and get access to it anyway, so I would have a big advantage on private land. But at the end of the day, because no one knew where it was, they were unable to ask for permission.

I think a championship everyone needs to be put at the same level. What is the point of having a champs if you can get a leg up by knowing the right people? Do you want to find the best angler or the person who knows te right people.

I have allot of access, so im coming from a non bias position.
A book with fishing locations and identified boundaries I believe is the only way to do this. There is some wicked fishing spots through Te Kaha, most wouldn't even know where to start on who to ask..... Guys from welly or the far north travelling shouldn't have to find joe blogs to ask him for permission. Because at the end of the day, with where its at, because it is so grey, the angler can just say Je blogs said anyone could go in if they wanted to...... and as stated above, your not going to advertise that, and it falls into the rules...

Hi Chad,
Dave and I are off to the exec meeting this weekend to present our work to date as host club so hopefully after the meeting we will be able to get some confirmed information out and about. I am in the final processes of developing a Powerpoint Presentation with most of the accessible fishing areas within the boundaries, target species, best baits, distance from Gisborne etc etc, I intend putting this on a dvd that will go out to all clubs in the next month, on the NZACA website and also on a new facebook page that I am creating for the Nationals. This will hopefully get people studying the areas, doing some homework and hatching some tentative plans. Seven months out and we hope over the next few months to drum up the interest so that come the time to register, everyone is keen and well informed.

I have to agree with you Chad , it is very hard in this day and age to both find the time and the money to do these events so you can not do these things blindly.
I and many others are fast coming to realization that the event must be changed . By fishing one or two beaches close to the headquarters and not fishing at night will be one of keeping costs down and inhance the social side of things as well as making it far more marketable event.
Let the jousting begin.

Its fantastic to have a large fishing area, but it adds complications to the definition on private access.

I think the options should be ether fish where ever you like within the boundry and sort all the access you want

OR

Actually stipulate boundaries like-

#Wairoa River mouth to the southern end of Tailors bay
#Southern end of dinahs beach through to the northern end of Mahanga.

And work your way around the boundary situating designated fishing boundaries within the boundary.

I don't like the idea of everyone being forced to fish Whakaki, and grabbing a lottery ticket at the carpark........ You still need a large area where fisherman to make critical decisions based on the weather and where the fish may be feeding. But I think that grey area needs to be made black or white, because it will rare its ugly head.

Choice one Karla, I know you guys will do a great job!

I agree with you Chad this has been a very contenscious subject at many Nationals,and I am sure that all will be clearly set out for all fishers when the Gisborne delegation adresses the Executive meeting on Saturday. I really like the idea of a single beach event where all fishers are starting on a level field. Ideally pegging the beach and drawing positions ( two or three different ones in a day) is the answer. Mahanga Beach is one that we have been discussing. There is easy access for everyone and plenty of room so set up a sponsor area and general angler area. Pegging the beach so each angler has the same amount of water (say 50m) for each period (say three hours) and then back to the HQ for a sandwich and a draw for you next spot is not as bad as you may imagine. Anyone could draw a sweet spot and the challenge is to make the most of the area you are allocated. An older or less fit competitor would have an even chance as a fit youngster. Just my thoughts but I know this system is workable.
At least with the above plan it wont just go to the angler who knows a farmer with awesome fishing on his property, or one who is fit enough to climb into untouched spots where the majority of anglers cant. These days it is a substantial investment in time and money to compete at the Nationals. Why would we bother when we know we have little chance of success.

Dick, this is the sort of thing that should at least get discussed.

Mahanga is a small beach and very rarely fishable..........

Tide also comes right upto the dunes so access is difficult.

By making everyone fish together, you revert in the complete opersite direction of knowledge and skill and you place fate on luck. You still need a balance and a reasonably open area........

I still believe the champs is made to test the best, age is not a factor. They have a golie oldie section for those who feel age is a barrier........

It is rewarding walking into spots, spots anyone can fish and are not private........ Putting it on in one area would not only be bloody boring, but what are the chances that particular beach will be fishable.......

Its a fantastic concept how it is currently set, having the knowledge of the coast is a huge advantage, and so that should be, after all, to get knowledge you need hard yards, which is a key factor.

And to answer your question Gary on why would we bother........ To prove to your self that you can do it........ "Why not".

I wouldn't like to go to a nationals only for a lottary ticket and a peg to deside my fate, I would prefer using information that as an angler you gather over years and putting it to the test...... Save the sammy's for when the bins full and its weight in time.... and wash em down with a cold ale.

I don't mean to pick at the idea, and I think its great, but if you want to test yourself you still need space to make the right or wrong discussion, leaving luck at home and fate at your feet

How about a two day fishing event with one a controlled single beach event as I described above and the other a R, S and B, anything goes on public land event.?

I think its great that we get a chance to at least explore these ideas.

We hear what you are saying Chad, but 100 anglers doesn't make a very promotable event from a sponsers point of view. If the NZACA doesn't look at the way it funds its self the way the Nats are run it could be a mute point.
For me personaly time is my enemy, there just isn't enough of it, as it is I am going to have to live to about 120yrs just to get the stuff around home done let alone go fishing. I think that we need to have look at the bigger picture. What are your thoughts on comps leading up to the Nats with public/NZACA using the public to help fund the NZACA in a small way, therefore allowing the NZACA to promote and serve its members better. fishing.

I realy like your idea Phill of a series of comps around the country timed right you could make it quite an event (i.e head north in the cooler months) with a final in a set area with big points on offer.

On a beach like the 90 i think your idea would work GK but in other areas it dose become a lottry ticket but I do like the idea of a 2 day event, Day 1 restrict the boundry Day 2 go hard open to anywhere.

It comes down to one thing at the end of the day
It is a National Event to find the best in the compertion, as an angler HOW MUCH DO YOU WANT IT i believe to win an event like this you have to put in a massive amount of effort do your home work and have your shit sorted.
In saying that I/some would also be interested in just going along for the experance and fishing along side some of the best this country has to offer.

currently budget changes is needed across the board in all sports, the economic down turn will effect more then 1 or 2 of us on here, at the end of the day changes are a must to keep these sorts of champs ticking over, with being involed with motorcycle racing and currently we are looking at rule changes to superbikes and the main thing people are asking is to help limit the cost of mods to said bikes, how ever that sort of thing cant be applied here

What are things fishos want to see, help bring costs down? etc etc
Im down for the idea of a championship series I belive this is what is needed for a NZ title of any shape or form... kind of like why have the world championship in rowing but we have the olympics if you get what I mean.
How ever with doing a series like this means more travel, time off work and assiocated costs that everyone here will be aware of....
But with that system will that help attract numbers to enter comps or push them away...

At the end of the day its a NZ title up for grabs and the person who deserves it the most is the person that puts the most effort in regardless of what the code is no one should hear comments off "dude your lucky to get that title" so a lottery type system doesnt seem a right fit IMO but if you were to do a lottery type system I belive you MUST give extra day to fish where ever in a region, that way if you have ticket that puts you on a spot that is mud but knowing that if they put even more effort in to making up your losses on day 1 if you get my drift there for the above comment of the most effort deserves it!

Im still only new to surfcasting and maybe a bit out of line here but I think what is important that pros and cons are looked at and get anglers to have their say and not just base it on manority or decided by people that arent out and about with NZACA and not knowing what people want.

Before I joined the North Shore Surfcasting Club I'd never heard of the Nationals, I'd heard of the Beach'n'Boat & the Snapper Classic but no competition that marketed itself as the NZ Nationals.

As I understand it the NZACA Nationals is only for members of affiliated clubs, non members can join the Kiwi Fishers(?) if they want to fish it. With club memberships generally declining around the country, is it time to open up the competition to all who want to enter?

I also am not in favour of a forced fishing location. Local knowledge and access aside, one of the things I enjoy about fishing new areas of the country is researching it on the various forums, talking to other fishos about it, google maps stalking it and coming up with a plan myself.

Personally I'd like to see the use of boats or kayaks to reach shorebased fishing spots. I put them in the same category as using a 4x4 wagon to access a remote beach, my car can't travel on a beach but it can carry a kayak which I can then use to access that ledge I want I fish, there's no difference.

We can leave the aircraft ban in tho, that's just sensible

If we can tap into the public events the cost could be reduced with prizes won. By belonging to a club and teaming up and car pooling also reduces cost.
Being at public events as club members gives exposier to both the clubs and the NZACA.
It it not intended to create new events it would be more sensable to piggy back onto existing comps.

The set beach comp is not a lottery. Dont get that idea. You will draw three positions in a day (for instance)and to be successful you really will have to have your s... together. You will be fishing three different areas at three different tide stages probably for different species each time. If this day is worthhalf your points then you will need to be a very versatile angler. Far more skill will be required to be successful. It wont be a matter of being able to carry a mountain of burley into a secluded spot and poling out snapper, this will be real fishing.

As true that is Gary if someone gets a hole or nice channel in there 50m for a 3rd of the day he/she would have a major advantage over the rest, true?. And agree boats and kayak are a no go for that stuff fish one of the NZLBG clubs comps.

Yes and no as two others will also get the channel for a session. Remember that the tide is changing too. Some species dont require a channel, eg.flounder, kahawai, trevally, lemonfish etc. The best spots is really unimportant and an understanding of the whole beach, the food available and the species that may be present is all important.
Takes a bit of getting your head around and sounds like an easy way out but there are other merits too. Having all the anglers on one beach allows the sponsors to get at them. It means that a central gathering area can also be a place where sponsors can show/sell their wares.
Keep thinking.......the more ideas the better.

The idea is to carry points into the Nats from the pre events also. Gary makes a good point making you think outside the square as far as fish you could target . Maybe look at combined bag weights. It would also allow fish to be weighed and released.

Sorry Gary I take exception to the final part of your statement. When did surfcasting become the only real fishing? (implied).

The problem I see is that the competition can't be all things to all fishermen. I prefer remote ledges and burley. Gary prefers holes and gutters on a surf beach.

Could be over four rounds drop your worst , points for entering , points for fish make it simple one make of fish at each round.
Distance casting days ie postal casting points could go forward to Nats points .
It is all about participation , with planing it could help level out the playing feild.
The other problem is the Nzaca Nats is trying to be all things to everyone.

Right my views on this.

Having a points system run over a year is not a good option as some of the clubs in NZ have a fantastic fishery on there door step and wouldn't put us all on a level playing field regardless if its species based or not.
Put the kayak section under the boat section as they carry almost as much gear and fish pretty much the same locations.
Fishing on one beach - personally I think you would see a lot of people pull out of the Nats as that is more related to coarse fishing style not salt water. Why can't we just reduce boundaries and restrict private access instead.
The person that wins the top angler should have the option of going to Aussie to represent NZ as should the top caster and either be payed for or subsidised by the NZACA.
At the moment all the NZACA does is keep records and those are not up to date- they need to be more proactive in supporting amateur fisherman in NZ e.g- opening up areas for clubs,talking to the commercial industry regarding inshore fishing, starting dialog with local Iwi regarding access for clubs in closed areas etc, perhaps we'll see club membership grow then.
Sponsorship - why would a company want to support something that does nothing, the general public and a lot fisherman dont even know who they are.This needs to change - again write up in the mags ,fishing papers telling people the benefit of belonging to a club and the NZACA.
If you open the Nats to the public why join a club???
The Nats should be for anglers that fish and contribute to the club they belong to not some one coming on holiday to NZ and decides they want to fish - thats not right. Why is there no South Island clubs involved- some of them are very big in the south.
We want to get Distance Casing off the ground- get the young guys into it- problem been no info out there regarding it unless on a forum- put it in a local paper radio what ever- NZACA CASTING DAY bring your gear learn to cast and get distance- surf -popper- spin what ever just to get people there.

I would not and not want the Nats to be open to the public . The idea is to is to involve the nzaca membership and exec at events that are open to the public eg the Moki 1000 this would expose the public to nzaca clubs and if a small part of the entry fee could come back to the nzaca to help pay for the events you have mentioned Scuzzy.
I have been involved in enough comps run over several rounds to see its benefits . You will learn more in one sesean of comps than you will in several years of going it alone .
We all know that the nzaca is not perfect and that is why we are talking about it now.

Well I didnt think that I would create such a plethora of comments but at this stage they all have a certain amount of merit to them and just because the meeting is to be held to-morrow doesnt mean that these comments need to stop the more I get from you on this forum the more I can try to do at future meetings.As our national Secretary is always saying this is YOUR ASSOCIATION so we need to know what YOU want from us this forum could be the best place for members of clubs to get there points across and maybe some-thing done. I will endeavour to get some answers to the questions that have been raised and post them on the message board next week. I thank you for your time and questions and hope that we can continue to serve the Association and its clubs and members as best we can.Thank-you.

Hey Guys fair enough not to open to the public.I'm not a member of a club and I know my options available in Gisborne. First of all Im a mad keen surfcaster/rock fisher and love it cause my family get into it as well.
My choice so far not to join a club is purely because I enjoy the planning of trips and locations which I learn a lot from whether successful or unsuccesful.
My lifestyle is busy and when the opportunity and time is there to go fishing i choose to do it with my boys that I dont get to see everyday,I also want to be able to maximise my fishing options as opposed to being potentially on a beach with a club in the wrong sort of conditions because that is when the club day is set.
In terms of the subject i agree with Chad and Scuzzy set boundries that can allow for weather & condition options but make them public accessable spots.
This allows for people to enjoy the research aspect or use their knowledge, that as Chad has pointed out has been earned doing the hard yards. I understand the social side of clubs and learning off fellow club members but that could be achieved at any club day.
I'm sure i could learn a lot from someone like Chad who has an amazing ability to read conditions and has a great understanding of how to target specific species and where and when they are likely to be there.
I had never caught a legal snapper up until early this year now i have caught approximately 20 with the biggest one being 2kg, 18 of these have been caught at night, something I never used to do(knowledge learnt) at beaches I never used to know about(knowledge learnt) using lumo bling (knowledge learnt) species caught first time species caught this year eagle ray, snapper, Gurnard, lemonfish, wrasse, Red Cod, Trevally and Jack Mackrel. So what I've learnt this year in conditions that were not the best have me salavating for the year ahead with much improved conditions expected.
Firstly The Nats should be all about putting into place the knowledge that you have learnt.
Secondly the most fun comes from actually planning your locations/gear/baits etc
Thirdly it should be enjoyable if ya arent going to enjoy it dont go.

Possibly 2 sections those who want to adventure to unrestricted areas and those who want to be restricted (based in one spot). You can either have one overall title or one for each. Restricted Trophy Confined Area Trophy
Unrestricted Trophy Unconfined Area Trophy.

Da- Iceman, back in the 80's the best 2 fisherman from each club fished for the Top fisherman trophy in there own area approx 1-3 km's of coast line, all other members and supports fished in a different area for there trophys which was a good set up.As the top fisherman from the clubs were on the same playing field,over the 2 days they fished 2 different locations-, I dont think we could back to what it was but it worked

Some of you have missed the point of the controlled one beach contest that I have been mentioning. It is one way to give everyone an even chance. Skills, knowlege, adaptation, the ability to read your water, bait selection, tackle selection and rig selection will be very important if you want success. The beach could be 90 mile or Henderson or Tokerau in the north or Whirinaki, Foxton or Ocean Beach in the southern NI. In a time of extreme weather it could be in a sheltered harbour where there is access to enough water. Kaimaumau and Ohiwa come to mind. It could be in big surf (we are surfcasters after all)or in calm conditions. You will need to research and prepare if you want to do any good. Anyway I would just like those who think that they may be excluded from the rocks at the bottom of the cliff take another look at the above as PART of the contest.
The other part can be open to a section of coast that is appropriate. It should be only held where there is public access by car or walking. It could include rock fishing although some areas are devoid of rocks within a decent driving distance. Hawkes Bay based in Napier has few rocks within an hour drive. Foxton coast has none, Gisborne has plenty as does Opotiki and Auckland. It will just depend where the base is. Boat access is not appropriate and should be left with the boat fishing section. Two such days in the National event caters for everyone. If you are only adept at one style of fishing then you will need to make the most of that one day. With equal points available for both days regardless of wether you have different species each day it will sort out the most adaptable and skillfull surfcaster right?
Add in casting points (same for everyone) and you will come out with a worthy New Zealand Champion.

By the way for those who do not know me I was the guy dropping into unfished ledges in the far north on long ropes and carting burley and gear to places where few had ever fished back in the 1970s and 80s. We caught big kingfish and sharks and opened up the LBG scene at that time. Many of you would have used the concrete rod holders that we put in then at popular spots. A lot of that fishing is beyond me now but I do have some fishing skills that allow me to compete in open competition. All I ask is for a level playing field.

We know who you are Gary and I-we respect that. BUT i struggle with the concept of one beach. I understand where you are comming from, but confined areas take away knowledge and adds luck. Look at any competition where one beach is fished, picket fence and no skil envolved at all. Yeep, it gives everyone a chance sure, but rig selections not every thing.

The social side be seen in a club event, that to me is not what a national event is about, its about trying every trick in the book and taking risks in spot u know should work well

There are plenty a social events in a club calander, leave this one to truely find a champ where ya have to do your home work and work for it, dont water it down to make it a lottery.

if you doubt ya ability to win, dont go. . . Or keep them eye brows up, stay positive and push til the end!

One thing I would like to see is at club level advertising more, getting more young blood into the clubs.
I have been thinking of joining the NP surfcasters for awhile but not done it yet, I hope to soon as I would love to fish alongside guys like Leon and co and help them develop a website.
In today's world websites and places like this (forums)are where us passionate fish'o live, learning more from day to day, there is a massive amount of knowledge in here and a Big thanks to all of you that have been helping me with my quest.
I hope to tag along to a nats and next year could be my first. everyone has made fare comments and as you can see we are all very passionate about this sport and what we think the nationals could be. A split between a masters i.e. guys like Gary and others that are not as mobile as they once where and a open event that gives boundary's but must be walked into wherever appeals to me then its about homework and personal want to win this thing.
Not always does spot X produce the best fishing only homework knowing your shit and how much you want it can lead to a true champ.

I think it depends what you want NZACA to be in the first place. Personally I think being NZACA national champ should mean something and shouldn't come easy or be left to chance.

There's too much "level playing field" talk for my liking, and that's been a constant over recent years. Level for who? Level against the guy who'll fish all night, get to his spot early and berley, will survey all the options make an educated choice about where to fish in the conditions, who will walk an hour into his spot? Those options are availabe to everyone who is able bodied and committed to their fishing.

My impressions of the NZACA are that it has an ageing membership and is a long way away from the cutting edge of shore-based fishing in NZ. Attitudes seem to be that it wouldn't consider allowing people to reach spots by IRB or "gift" advantages to quad bike owners at a nats event.

Those are just my views but what do memebrs want the NZACA to be? Maybe its more of a social scene, alot of competitive fishos seem to be drifting away.

Chad asks who are the Sponsers that need to looked after .
The answer is all of them , starting with our national Sponser Composite Developments and any others we can cling onto and ones that we are looking at approaching . We I believe we all would like the NZACA to do more for us in direct and indirect ways .
Naki join a club and at the same time volunteer to become the NZACA web master .
As I keep saying the nzaca including the Nats are hard to promote.
I have though my business I have spoken to some of our Sponsers and I can tell you they are hanging in by a thread .
In these tough times it is much easier to say no to Sponsership I know I get approached at least three times a month .
All I ask is look at the big picture .

What do sponcers want-get out of it?

How-why, does this impact on the fishing sedule?

I am not and should not be privy to the deal CDs have with the nzaca that stays inside the executive but they are the naming Sponsers.
There are other smaller Sponsers like ourselves who add value in smaller ways quite often behind the scenes
Why should we set fishing schedule around sponsers . For one thing you would be able to meet them face to face to tell them how wonderful their gear is. Product exposure .

Suggestion 10000 I was talking to a multiple club champion today and we were talking about this subject (by the way he likes the one beach idea ) but we could see a problem with say a pegged beach with couples and teams , the solution was to break the beach up into areas which you drew a number for quite simple really .

Ill be completely honest, i hope you guys are never put in a put in a position to make that decision.

Coming from a passionate position, you guys should look into knitting, with half time breaks for club sammies.

If we dont even know what a sponcer is doing for thn nzaca, how can you expect people understand, that needs to be disclosed, why support a sponcer if you have no idea what they are doing for you.? If they want recognition then state what its for?

And you dnt have to water down a competition and turn it into a game a battens up to support a sponcer, i personally feel thats not good enough for a national champs

I know its only a suggustion, but its worth debating since its geting seriously looked at. To me thats not REAL fishing at all. And i think if your going to use a persons status to add creibility, use there name.

Not going to happen. There are enough one beach contests already although the boundaries will become smaller.
As for the Gisbourne Nats 2013 the rule is basically this."If you need to have permission to fish an area
it is out of bounds to all" ie Kemps, Cape Runaway and the like are out of bounds. To give a fair reason for this. All these people have been approached re the availability of these areas. All are of the opinion that they are all legally responsible for any incidents and accidents that may occur and the repercussions could be expensive and disasterous for them. So it is their wish that these areas are not included.

That's a good decision about private access. I guess people can still hike around the Queen's Chain to some nice rock platform, but I don't believe that's an issue. After all, they will have to carry everything in and out on their backs. Good on them if they're that keen.

What you have to watch though is some smarty pants saying it's public access from over yonder (a 2km walk over sharp rocks at low tide) but this nice land owner said we could take our 4wds (with our 2 tonne of burley) in here and set up camp the night before. In other words, we didn't actually require public access to fish here, so we're within the rule. So how the rule is worded and elaborated on is important. Other people could simply go through private land without asking. It's not always clear to me what is and isn't private access along some of the coast around the Te Kaha area.

If the contest is a single day-night-day session, and I believe it will be, people fishing beaches only will have a chance. In the past, organisers have set boundaries for day 2 that included the rocks and in the interests of safety made it daylight fishing only. I've always disagreed with that. In the BOP, that makes a beach fisher uncompetitive.

It is always going to difficult to please everyone in fact you can not. The access issue could be helped by having areas set, with the help of people like Chad with local knowledge, these could be 20 spots up the coast solves the private land thing the orginizers have s good idea were to find entrants,for safty,filming, and personal notication.

Re the Chinese. Factually most Chinese are like most Kiwis and fish honestly and fairly with rod and reel. As a national body the NZACA has recently committed to hosting a group of boat fishermen, a group of shore fishermen and a group of freshwater anglers from China. Eyes up and wide open cause this Exec. is on the move. We are foremostly getting ourselves up with time ie. With media outlets for the benefits of our members,(Facebook for one), the promotion and benefits of joining a club and making sure it happens,making our National Competition worthy of its name and the promotion of NZ as a fishing destination

My 2 cents worth....Change the name make it more informal, "NZACA" sounds scary,its boring,I think the title just scares people away, make it more fishy that the average joe fisher people can relate to readily, first impresions count.

Well Chad you now have your answer and there are no grey areas only black and white.
There has been quite a lot of discussion on the future format of the Nationals and I cannot see much change happening in the near future but I will say that as far as I am concerned the fishing boundaries need to be reduced in size.
This has been a rather interesting and enlightening exersise for me and I would like it to continue with new and interesting questions and comments from more club members directed to those of us who have been elected to ensure that the Association continues and prospers for many years to come.Congratulations to Yoey for putting his hand up and accepting one of the most difficult port folios that we have and I am sure he will do a first class job.

Hi All
Just to reiterate what has been said about Private Access. As Host Club we took a lot of consideration before putting our final stance to the exec on Saturday. We asked members, listened to feedback from past and more recent, took into consideration the boundary and availability of public access, talked with some private owners and listened to the complexities from their perspectives before we come up with our stance.
Private Access refers to any land that can be only accessed via seeking permission to enter. If permission is needed to be sort, then it is not accessible. I hope that makes it clear and allows everyone some clarity.
We are about to release some information in the next month to all clubs and also on the NZACA Nationals 2013 Gisborne Facebook page and NZACA Website that will show that the boundaries have an extensive number of wonderful public accessible beaches/shorebased areas to entice every sort of anglers, as Mark mentioned there are still areas that can be accessed via hiking with your gear, and good luck to those anglers who put in the hard yards to get to them.
Personally, I think that to be a top angler it takes an angler who researches and studies the area, takes into consideration the target species, best fishing times, talks to locals, hatches a plan, starts out with that plan, when it doesnt work, they move on to plan B,C,D,E and also knows the best gear to use in those areas. That person (combined with some good fishing skills) makes top anglers and when those people compete against each other to do the same, then the one whos plan hatched best will be the winner of the tournament.
To also give some heads up, we will also be following a very similar programme to what was held in Feilding. Only difference being is that we will be having the Registrations, Briefing and AGM on the Wednesday morning prior to Distance Casting starting. Feedback we received was that people liked that format, so we are running with that also.
We want Gizzy Nationals to be awesome, we look forward to you all coming

sorry I dont know much about NZACA and please foregive my ignorance here,

Is there any chance NZACA would do a "workshop" or have they done this in the past.

This was done with Motor cycling New Zealand (MNZ)about 18 months ago and it was open to ALL members of MNZ not just a club rep, the point of this was for riders and officals and event organisers to get together and discuss where each class/Discipline is heading, what needs to be changed in the rules what do we need to do to get more people on grids etc etc this could be done in the same manner with NZACA where surfcasting/boating and kyaking can talked over also this in its self would help raise the profile of NZACA and would help with this above thread in the past, with time comes changes and if we and NZACA still stay in the times of when NZACA was established then we and NZACA will die a slow painfull death.

Feel free to point out that im wrong as once again Im new to national fishing comps and the likes and have an open mind to this.

Somewhere along the line we lost track that we are talking about the New Zealand Surf Casting Nationals.
Where is the line drawn?
Soon as we leave the surf to fish off rocks? Using boats to get to sheltered areas when the surf is up?
Without taking it too literally surely surfcasting is casting into the surf.
The beauty of this discussion which shouldnt end because the meeting has, is that we are getting a lot of ideas out there.
Forget about cheats, they are only cheats to themselves and most will be easily exposed. Name and shame and chuck them out of the NZACA I reckon.
During the 1990s I did a lot of guiding of Japanese rock fishers. We accessed most places by boat or helicopter they didnt want to walk)and got to fish a lot of untouched water around Cape Karikari, Henderson Bay, North Cape and Maria area and also down Lottin point part of the country.The fishing was rediculously easy compared to most easily accessed spots nearby. Fresh bait and berley would get the fish eating out of your hand. WE caught (and lost)huge kingfish regularly, we kept few under 20kgs and the biggest ones went back to Japan whole. We caught kahawai up to 23 lb (kermadecs) and snapper on poppers was a great party trick in the evenings, trevally to 10kgs were caught. Its not like that any more in all but the hardest spots to reach.Chad and Roger Mulvay proved that with their epic fishing at the northern Nationals a few years ago.
My point is that rock fishing and surfcasting are two different things.
Surfcasting has some anomolies too. Take that famous Hawkes Bay Beach Whakaki. It matters not how far you travel on your quad in either direction from the carpark access. Chances are that most of the big snapper will come from the access point.Have a look at the photo of my wife Sue with a big snapper in the latest Fishing News. That was caught in front of the truck at the access. 23lb! Didnt need a boat for that one.

Anyway I just think that there could be a lot more discussion and sharing of ideas before we get this right.

Gary, I think we're all interpreting something different when the word Shore is used within the rules, as I can only find mention of the NZACA Fishing Championships in the 2012 Handbook.

Admittedly The Wiseman Cup – All-round Surfcasting Champion: goes to the highest aggregate points from both in shore fishing and casting. So maybe at sometime in the past it was for Surfcasting but the rules do not explicitly state that.

Anyone have some history on the Wiseman Cup?
