The positive is probably just a common Ignition feed.
Use an amps clamp for the monitoring I=V/R
Scope both the Primary and secondary signals and post.
The "Duff" HT lead will not have helped the problem.
Fit OE coils and leads.

Jim, as far as I know the coils are switched via the earth (by the ECU) and not the live as per your post?
