hi paul. had a passatt and a sharran with the same symptoms as you are having and the first one drove me mad like yours is trying to find it. turned out to be the turbo's that were at fault in both cases, mine were coming up with the boost pressure control and map dtc's. i sent the ecu to atp to test the map sensor first, they gave it the ok but as it was an intermittent fault (been the turbo i would have thought the fault would be present all the time) i asked them to replace the map sensor anyway £150. fault still occured, checked boost control valve and wiring (ok) on autodiagnos it gives you a minimun and maximum boost value, mine was exeeding the max so i went to the turbo. there are 2 different turbo's on these vehicles, change on 1998,yours is the later one which the turbo people informed me are "VERY VERY prone to failure of the waistgate and the vanes internally.turbo cured the fault and the 2nd vehicle was far easier to diagnose. i arent saying it is the turbo mate but it sounds like you are stressing like i did,if its fairly easy to remove i would advise your customer and get it checked mate.
    good luck.
