I'm certainly not going to answer for dovetailjoint, but personally I think a second referendum is now the best way out of the parliamentary deadlock. Something with an AV or run off system rather than a binary choice. There could be an option of remain and a few options for different ways to leave. Having it as a run off where there were two options on a final ballot would surely prevent any question of it splitting the leave vote. As for the case of a remain win making it 1-1, then I think that is a red herring. A second vote would be done with greater knowledge of what Brexit would be, how it would look and what it would mean. Especially with different options on the ballot. Whatever you think of the result, the first referendum was a crap question and loads of information about what Brexit would entail has come to light since. For example the Irish border and how that will reignite sectarian tensions wasn't really properly explored during the first vote. As for there being a second vote if the first had gone the other way; you're right we probably wouldn't be having one. Although we would have had two and a half years of Farage's ugly grid on the BBC non-stop telling us how 48% voted out and we should be having another referendum.
